In this day and age of increased shareholder activism, it’s tough to know whether companies and their shareholders are on the same team. When a company is young, in the pre IPO stage, perhaps being funded by angel investors or venture capitalists, the investor has a lot of direct influence on the strategic decisions and actions of the company. They often work closely with the management team, sitting on the company’s board to provide their expertise and support to help the company becoming stronger and successful, and hopefully, one-day, profitable.
But as the company grows and enters the IPO stage, the relationship starts to change as the regulatory environment tightens its grip, disclosure rules kick in, and board member voting by the broader shareholder begins.
